Quick Thoughts on How to Become a Social Media Manager With No Experience

I did a Reddit Ask Me Anything and the #1 question was: how do you become a social media manager with no experience?

So I’m finally gonna answer this question.

It’s impossible. You cannot get a paid SMM job with zero experience. You can however get a paid social media manager job with zero paid experience though.

Let me explain.

When I did this Reddit post, I had a dozen people message me asking to work for me when they’ve never grown a social media profile. It’s dumb as hell.

Why would I trust someone to grow an account if they’ve never done it before? You’ve got no proof or portfolio. You’ve got the same 24 hours in the day as me and the same access to social media so go grow an account on your own time then come back to me once you have some proof you can grow an account.

To get a paid job as a SMM, you need to grow your own social media profile. It’s legit that simple.

If you can do that, you can get a job easy.

It can be your personal account. Or it can be a meme page or a Taylor Swift fanpage or a page dedicated to vintage clothing. It doesn’t matter. You need to grow one yourself before you can be trusted and paid to grow another account.

This is legit the only way.

Once I grew my personal Twitter to 10k+, companies began trusting me with their Twitter accounts. But before I grew my own account, I had no proof.

So my advice on how to become a SMM with no experience?

Stop asking people for SMM jobs when you’ve never done it; instead, spend that time growing your own social media accounts. On social media, your account(s) is your portfolio. So go out, build a portfolio, be patient, and then leverage it to start making money.
